Literacies for the Near Future

One of the fundamental components within the broad scale transformation of education centers on crafting curricula dedicated to emergent literacies, and curricula that mobilize rhetoric, design, ethics and analysis – core competencies for today’s learners – within a constantly shifting media landscape. Indeed, leaders at K-12 schools, colleges and universities across the country have collectively put their heads down to study and interrogate the ways in which we might not only rethink 21st century literacy, but also address new pedagogies, faculty development, assessment and even the very design of our learning spaces. However, despite the urgency of these efforts, I would argue that we should also be looking upward, scanning the horizon for new technologies, imagining new epistemologies, and preparing for a future that approaches far more quickly than we realize.
